SEO doesn't need to be complicated for a small business. Most of the value comes from a handful of fundamentals, done properly, rather than chasing every tactic you read about.
1. Get your basics right first
- Clear, descriptive title tags and meta descriptions on every page
- One clear heading structure per page (a single H1, logical H2s beneath it)
- A sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- Fast load times, especially on mobile
None of this is glamorous, but skipping it undermines everything else you try afterward.
2. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
For any business with a physical location or service area, this is one of the highest-leverage things you can do:
- Complete and accurate business information
- Real photos of your business, team, or work
- Regular updates and posts
- Genuine customer reviews, responded to professionally
3. Write for the questions people actually ask
Think in terms of what a potential customer would type into a search bar, not the words you'd use internally. Long-tail, specific phrases usually convert better than broad, competitive terms anyway.
4. Local relevance
If you serve a specific city or region, say so clearly on your site, and keep your contact details and service area consistent everywhere they're listed online.
A simple starting checklist
- Audit your current site for the basics above
- Set up or claim your Google Business Profile
- Identify 5-10 realistic keyword phrases for your business
- Write or update key pages around those phrases
- Keep an eye on Search Console for what's actually working
